Composting in San Francisco

San Francisco has one of the most green composting systems in the nation. Green Curb Side bins collect food scraps and yard waste. According to the Sf Gate the compost is driving to Vacaville for use in food and wine production. No one needs to do their own composting in San Francisco to save the environment. But, if you want to compost to improve your garden you will find that your plants will grow healthier and stronger with the addition of compost to your soil. Most of the soil in San Francisco is either sand or clay. Some areas of the city have rocky soil. San Francisco soil is low in organic matter. You can recycle your plant clipping and food scraps to make compost and mulch for your garden. In nature fallen leaves create a nature mulch that improves the soil. In the garden we can accelerate that process by composting. You will need a bin with a lid to keep raccoons out of your compost if you compost food scraps. I prefer a round plastic bin with a solid one piece construction. It take years to improve the soil in your garden, but each time you add organic matter you improve the soil, and in a few years, your soil will be more well drained and easier to turn. Weeding will be much easier. And your plants will grow larger. Some may even grow to a monster size.
